A great way to sample our region's diverse attractions is to make a leisurely circuit of both sides of the Cape Fear River.
The ferry that crosses the river near its mouth is the key to this fascinating tour. Although it involves less than two hours of total driving time from Wilmington and back, the Cape Fear River Circle Tour can easily be an all-day adventure.

This unincorporated area gets its name from the massive Civil War fort that was called “The Gibraltar of the Confederacy.” The fort protected the approaches to Wilmington from the U.S. Navy's blockade throughout the war, until it was captured in a bloody amphibious assault in January 1865.
